The next day passed in much the same fashion. I spent my time lying on the padded floor, chained there like a dog. My captors must have been watching me closely, because they caught on to my sleeping schedule fast. When I woke up, it was usually to find a fresh plate of food in front of me.
I ate, though reluctantly. They alternated bringing me water and wine. I preferred the wine. As a dhampir, I didnât actually need much food or drink. In the twelve months since that side of me woke up, Iâd realized I was changing. I did a lot of research in the days following the assassination of my brother. When the spray of his blood hit my face and a single drop hit my tongue, itâd woken up the creature in me, and then it was all downhill from there.
Iâd become stronger at first, before my body realized I was letting it starve. I was faster, sharper, and even a bit smarter. It was like my entire body was functioning at a level of perfection a human could never achieve. I hated the sun, but didnât burn in it like a vampire. Dhampirs were abominations in the human world, but I didnât understand the hatred. Right now though, as I lay on the floor staring at the ceiling, I wondered what wouldâve happened to me had I given into the bloodlust. Would I have been strong enough to stop Carson or Ryan? Would I have been so easily captured by these mysterious men?
I didnât know. The what-ifs were likely going to keep me up at night for the foreseeable future. There were so many things I couldâve done differently, and I could spend the rest of my life dwelling on them. But then how would that help me? What I needed to do was figure out a way to handle these men. I needed to know what it was they thought I knew. Obviously, there was some kind of secret that they believed Ryan told me, even if they were dead wrong.
Ryan Harker was a lot of thingsâa horrible man, a sadist, a racist, and a liar. Those were just the names that stuck out the most. Even before we found out I wasnât his, I knew there was something off about him. I still didnât understand the draw my mother mustâve felt towards him. Sure he was handsome, but it was a plastic sort of charm. None of it was real, and apparently, my mom was too dense to realize that. I wanted to feel bad for her, having to share his bed and smile for his cameras all day, every day. I couldnât imagine sheâd planned for her life to end up like this.
But as bad as I felt, I knew sheâd made her own bed. Sheâd married a wealthy and powerful man, and still made the choice to go behind his back with a vampire and have a child. What the hell was she thinking?
The lights went off, and my whole body locked up.
